Accomplish Big Goals through Small Steps

As business owners we all have big goals. If we didn’t we’d probably still be happy working for someone else. When I am working with clients I help them to accomplish their big goals through taking small steps. Let’s look at it like planning a trip to a fantastic destination.

30,000 Foot view

A 30,000 foot view is a term that references the view from a large plane. As an international consultant I have spent quite a bit of time on planes and I can tell you the view from up there is vast! You can see things in ways you have never seen them before. However, you cannot see the details. For instance, I may be able to see the winding paths of a road from up there, but I cannot see if there are any cars on it.

As a business consultant, I describe big goals as a 30,000 foot view. They are a big-picture perspective of a project, a service or a product you want to launch into the world. It is grand and it is a beautiful vision – but it doesn’t have a lot of detail yet. In order to accomplish these big goals you have to plan small steps.

2,500 Foot view

My pilot friends tell me that their smaller planes top out at about 5,500 feet if they are flying a longer distance say from Gaborone to Maun, or Tuli to Francistown. But for recreational flying they stay up about 2,500 feet. From there they can see all sorts of things on the ground. They have sent me pictures they have taken of my house – from the air!

This altitude allows for more detail, but are still too high to see everything.

Big goals require this altitude drop as well in order to see the details required to do a project. However, to accomplish these goals we have to drop even further.

Ground level

When I travel I have a target destination, but I have to take small steps to get there. I have to book the ticket, pack my bag, and ensure my house & dog are taken care of while I’m gone. After that, I have to get to the airport, check in, go through security, and board the plane. Then, I can enjoy the view from 30,000 feet. I also marvel at the beauty from different altitude levels as we start to descend. But at the end of the day where I really want to be is on the ground where I have a clear, focused view of the destination and those I am there to see.

A big goal is the same. You can choose your destination, but it requires simple small steps to get you where you want to go.

Here are 5 tips for breaking down your big goal into small steps:

  1. Break down your goal into small, detailed, and manageable tasks.
  2. Set achievable deadlines for each of these tasks.
  3. Celebrate your successes along the way. This will help you to stay motivated and give you the confidence to keep moving forward.
  4. Stay focused by asking for help when you need it, and having a person you can check in with along the way.
  5. Stay flexible and adapt as needed. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan (hello delayed flights!), and that’s okay. Be willing to adjust your approach and keep moving forward.
